Arthur Heffter, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Arthur Heffter was a German psychologist and chemist. Heffter identified the active principle in the peyote cactus as mescaline and subsequently performed the first pure isolation of a psychedelic compound in 1897. He was the first chairman of the German Society of Pharmacologists, and was largely responsible for the first Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology.
